Evbiobe-Ora
other wise known as (Sabongidda-Ora) is located at Owan Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria.
The name came as a result of the invasion of the Northerner, whose main aim was to Islamized the people. This move was met
with a stiff resistance but the name of the town was changed from Evbiobe to (Sabongidda-Ora). It name remains like that till
this day, in remembrance of the invasion. The Ora people are mostly Christians thought there are fragment of other beliefs
among them. Their occupation is mainly farming especially in Cocoa,
Plantain and Yam. They are very friendly people love strangers a lot. No wonder they quickly embraced the missionaries who
visited there in 40s and quickly accepted the idea of establishing a grammar school. This lead to the early education of their
children, who in no distant time found themselves in the top position of the civil service of Nigeria in the 60s. In
area like the Police, Customs, the Prison Service, etc they were on top. It is in this very humble place, that Holy Trinity Grammar
School was founded.
Date Founded
Holy Trinity Grammar School is a Secondary School founded
by the Missionaries, on the 10th of February, 1948, in a town called Sagongidda-Ora in Owan West Local Government Area of
Edo State, Nigeria,
to teach post primary education in the acts and sciences to qualified students. It was later upgraded to teach HSC (Higher School Certificate)
Courses. It was ranked as one of the best schools in Nigeria
in old good day, talking about the 50s through the 80s. It must be mentioned when we talk of its contemporaries like, St Patrick’s
College Asaba, Government College Ughelli,
Edo College Benin,
etc.
School Facilities
The school was established as
mixed Secondary School with Boarding Facilities for Boys and Girls. That is Blocks of Houses with their various names for
both boys and girls, the Dinning Hall. It is also contains the Principal’s Residence, Block of Class Rooms, Teachers
or Master’s Living Quarters, the School Administrative Block, the Science Laboratory Block, the Library Block, a Foot
Ball Field. Below are the pictures of the various facilities of the school.
Names of the Boarding
Houses
The Names of the Houses or Hostels
were as you are entering into the compound:
1. Akinloye House
2. School House
3. Gordon House
4. Oyebode House
5. Owan House and
6. Spear House
The houses were meant to house
the boarders. Most especially those who came from distance cities like Lagos, Warri, Ibadan, Kaduna, etc to school in HTGS-Ora.
Student admitted were shared into the various houses. It was interesting and a pride to be a boarder. Day students were always
jealous where a boarder proudly mentions the name of his or her house. This was a motivating factor for the day students to
come to the boarding house most especially when they are in class four.
Hectic
Periods
The School passed through a hectic
time, during the educational removed period in Nigeria,
when government took over all the Schools established by the Missionaries. During this period, the School educational standard
dropped, the boarding facilities were cancelled as government could not expand the old facilities to cope with influx of students
to the school, due to over admission. The dinning hall was turned into class rooms; the science laboratories were no longer
functional including the school library. At a point in time, the school almost went into extinction but for the Old Students
Association. (OSA).
Today the name of the school and
the old facilities are beginning to come back to life. Most especially the restoration of the boarding facilities, as the
boarding houses and the dinning hall have come back to life. In 2004, an old student with his friends, single handedly built
and ultra modern library equipped with state of the art equipments and gave it to the school. The old class rooms and the
laboratories are being renovated and handed over to the school by the Old Students Association. As a matter of fact the school
has come back to life as a result of a joint effort of the school authority and OSA.
